J. S. Bach once wrote “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” Earle Bidwell, SUMC’s Director of Music and Conductor considers this to be at the heart of Music Ministries.
South Church has a long and storied tradition of music speaking to the soul, dating back to the establishment of the Chancel Choir in 1925 and the installation a spectacular Austin pipe organ.” Over the years, the program has evolved to include contemporary, as well as traditional music, large groups and small ensembles, a handbell choir a praise band and a Southern Gospel Vocal ensemble.
“Most people live and die with their music still unplayed. They never dare to try.” This cannot be said of Norman McFarlane who is the organist and pianist for the Chancel Choir and the instrumental leader at the traditional services.
